Steps for How to Start Making a Change in Your Life (3:47)
Changing your life doesn't have to be an overwhelming process. Get started with these steps from licensed therapist Tia Brown.
Step 1: Define Realistic Goals
Instead of setting a lofty goal, such as saving $10,000, work small and build your way up. For example, start with a goal of making it a point to save loose change. That might just be a few quarters and dimes every day, but that loose change adds up. Start small and increase your goal as you start to see change happening. Think of your goals as building blocks, picking one small thing to change or work on a week. Every week, add another building block on top. Over time, those goals will grow and with it, change will happen.
Step 2: Break the Cycle Keeping You From Moving Forward
Guilt is something that many women feel, and it can hold us back from being able to achieve what we really want. For example, if your goal is to feel happier and healthier that may mean you will have less time to spend with family or will temporarily log fewer hours at work. Often times, women feel guilty for taking time away from caring for others or their responsibilities to care for themselves. That guilt then makes you feel unhappy and rundown, which means you'll never get to the ultimate goal. Take the guilt out of that cycle and you'll find reaching your goal is much easier.
