Many people believe that in order to reach a goal, they must have willpower and natural abilities. This belief is actually often a hindrance for people. The key to finding motivation is to take a look at the way we think.

As a life coach and person who strives to be the best that I can be, I often suggest as well as use some motivation mental tricks that can help anyone reach their goals. Whether you want to lose weight, exercise more, find a new job, feel more love in your relationships or pursue a new hobby, or whatever your goal may be, the following suggestions can help you stay on track.

Think About What You Are Thinking About

This simply means your thoughts are what either drive you to reach your goals or they hold you back. Pay attention to whether your thoughts are filled with doubt or positivity. Our thoughts create our feelings, so when you try and push yourself but simultaneously think things like, “What if I can’t do this” and “This is too hard,” you are setting yourself up to feel fear and doubt. This regularly prevents people from reaching their goals.

Change Your Thinking

A belief is just a repeated thought, so if you think something over and over again, you will eventually believe it. If you regularly think, “I can’t ever stay motivated to lose weight,” that becomes your reality. If you change your thoughts to something like, “Even though I’ve struggled in the past, today is a new day, and I can do this,” this will eventually become your new truth.

When we think positive thoughts like, “I can do this” and “I’m going to feel so great if I keep trying and succeed,” or “I want to do this,” we create good feelings, which lead to motivation. When you change your thinking, you change your feelings, which ultimately leads to positive action and results.

Become More Conscious by Being More Present

Paying attention to our thoughts leads to greater awareness and helps us stay present in all that we do. Awareness, in itself, is extremely powerful when it comes to making lasting change. Many people don’t even realize that just getting more in touch with oneself and understanding your thought and behavioral patterns leads to lasting change.

Be Kind to Yourself

People often think they can hate their bodies enough to find motivation to lose weight. People beat themselves up about the way they parent in order to make changes. They think if they hate their job enough, it will motivate them to look for a more fulfilling one. I promise this will almost never lead to lasting change. When you don’t treat yourself with kindness, you feel bad, and when you feel bad, you tend to fall into old self-destructive patterns. Instead, know that every day is a new day, a new opportunity to try again. Think about a baby learning to walk; they don’t fall and think about being a failure. They get up and try again.

Cut yourself some slack. Reaching a goal is not meant to be easy, so give yourself some time. Know that it’s acceptable to have slip-ups. Most people don’t reach their goals easily or the first time they try. Sure, we would all love it if change was that simple, but in most cases that is not reality.

The people who succeed at reaching their goals the most in life are the ones who don’t give up. The reason they don’t give up is that they think differently, so they feel excited and motivated to keep going no matter what. If you want something badly enough, you will stop at nothing. Stopping at nothing requires feeling good, and feeling good requires knowing you can do anything you set your mind to.

When you doubt and self loathe, you are only hurting yourself. Start telling yourself you can, and you will. It’s actually as simple as that!
