The Only Exercises You Shouldn’t Do

Have you seen those commercials for the little neck exerciser device? This thing is supposed to strengthen muscles and improve the appearance of the neck. Slim your neck in just 2 minutes a day, the ad says.

Have you seen those commercials for the little neck exerciser device?  This thing is supposed to strengthen muscles and improve the appearance of the neck. Slim your neck in just 2 minutes a day, the ad says.


Do you think it can work? Strengthening the muscles of the neck has nothing to do with hanging skin or fat of the neck. In fact, hanging skin actually looks worse with stronger muscles.  If you exercise those neck muscles and actually make them stronger and larger, they will actually make your neck bands even more prominent. 


And double chins? Well, these are mostly fat. Spot exercise cannot possibly decrease fat in the neck – or anywhere, for that matter. Remember those belt machines of the 1960s?  Ridiculous.


So, how about studies? None in the medical literature show that neck exercise helps the appearance of the neck. Sure, if you lose weight, you’ll lose it everywhere, including the neck. So, save your money. Those toys won’t work.
