There’s a new reality TV show where brides compete to win plastic surgery procedures. Now, you might just think this is just trash TV, but beyond that, it turns the field of plastic surgery into a freak show. Surgical procedures should never be taken lightly, and should never be “won” in a contest. There can be complications and even deaths. I wonder if the producers of this show are actually hoping for a complication that would add some drama to the show.
It is considered unethical by both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. for plastic surgery procedures to be offered as prizes in contests. The plastic surgeon involved may have covered himself or herself by screening the contestants prior to the start of the show. Even if he/she faces scrutiny, they may be thinking that the publicity they gain will more than offset any trouble they get into. Publicity translates into dollars in most fields, including plastic surgery.
I suppose you can’t blame the network for this show – they’re just trying to make money. And the brides – they don’t know better. Fame and free plastic surgery must be very tempting. It’s the plastic surgeons who should know better.
