Have you heard the ads for “natural soap?” Do you think that’s possible? Well, I’ve never seen a soap tree or visited a soap mine. In fact, they don’t exist. And soap doesn’t exist in nature. All soap is made in a laboratory – or a kitchen. Soap comes from a chemical reaction between almost any fat or oil and a lye – like sodium hydroxide. That’s hardly a natural process.
You just can’t have natural soap! When companies call their soap natural, they are talking about the omission of extra chemicals – like artificial fragrances or preservatives or other substances that make the soap lather better. So, if you want a pure soap – and that’s a better name – look for a very short ingredient list. And be prepared for a soap that may not perform as well as you want.
