Q:
How on earth are you able to stay away from sweets when they come from every direction? - Julie

A:
This is something that we can all relate to, whether we have weight issues or not. Sugar is yummy. Sugar is hidden in so many products that are not even desserts! But as far as sweets are concerned, that was hard to tackle in the beginning of my journey. However, I can honestly say that after I burned off the first 30 pounds and increased weight lifting, something incredible happened! Cravings for sweets started to diminish! My body was hungry for nutrients. It was something I had never experienced before! During my workouts I would start craving a nice broiled fish, or big salad with diced chicken. I began to listen to my body more and gave it what it needed to perform at the gym! I do have a few cookies every so often, but I don't go overboard like I used to.

Q:
Do you use any exercise equipment at home or do you just go to the gym? - Chris

A:
Chris, I'm so glad you asked this! I do go to a gym and I also have a few things here at the house. When I first started my weight loss project a little over 2 years ago, I decided to take it on as a job.

And since I was a freelance illustrator working from home, I felt the need to get away from 'work' here at the house. Once I got over my fears of being in public at the gym in my old body, I began to really appreciate the support from fellow members of all shapes and sizes. Having access to the cardio equipment and the weight machines was crucial in my weight loss. I also hired a trainer to help me understand how to use those, because I was clueless!

At home I have a few free weights, some simple bands, a jump rope, a big exercise ball and a treadmill. For anyone wanting to get started without a gym membership, my best advice is to get yourself a $6 jump rope, a good pair of shoes and an exercise ball! It's a low cost investment with an incredible return!

Q:
Do you listen to music when you work out? - Michelle

A:
I absolutely have to listen to music when I do cardio, unless it's 2 pm and I'm watching Dr. Oz! Music energizes me and it's helpful to see if I can make it through certain songs while jumping rope at a fast pace. I also find that it's crucial for the sprint intervals that I do on the treadmill. It's challenging to try and run as fast as the pace of the beat!

Q:
What is your favorite dish to make? - Sahida

A:
As many of you know who are following me on facebook, I am a foodie. I really enjoy the whole process of blending flavors, textures and colors. I have to say, Sahida, that there really isn't one single favorite dish I have.

If I did have to choose though, I do make some killer open faced fish tacos with my own mango salsa! It's quite popular with my neighbors too! I will post that recipe on a separate tab so it is easy to find.
