Guys, what is it about 1 Thursday a year that gets the entire country on a plane, in a train, in a car, waiting in long lines with lots of extra baggage to go have a high-carb, high-calorie meal with their loved ones? I'm a little anxious, aren’t you? Why can't we declare Thanksgiving the same as any old day of the year? I propose we spread out the holiday over several days so there isn't as much traffic! How about folks whose last name begins with A-K have Turkey day on Thursday; L-S on Friday and T-Z on Monday? How about that for an idea! It would never fly, just like a fake turkey would never fly – or would it?
Now that I'm not overstuffing myself with high-fat, high-sugary foods for Thanksgiving, I've learned a lot of ways to cut some fat, cut sugar and still really enjoy the holiday!
Turkey is an excellent lean protein source. No problem there! But the skin is a good to avoid as well as the gravy, since most of that is the fat. If you are skipping the gravy, then you can skip the white potatoes too! Make a new kind of mashed potato; roast cauliflower, instead! Mash it, blend it w/ some non-fat Greek yogurt, toss in a little chicken broth, sea salt, pepper, even add a little nutritional yeast and olive oil. Delicious! You'll get some good fiber and will have tried something new! Cauliflower is low on this glycemic index, has fiber and protein and is loaded with vitamin C – 46% per serving!
Instead of making your regular sweet potatoes laced with marshmallow topping try my low-fat delicious alternative! Slice up skin on fresh sweet potatoes and roast them on a cookie sheet w/ a little olive oil. Cook at 350°F for about 30 minutes or until tender. Then mash them, toss them on a pretty dish, let cool to room temperature.
For the white topping- mix non-fat Greek yogurt, a little honey or blue agave nectar or natural sweetener in. Add in some cinnamon and top the sweet potatoes with that. Add a few more sprinkles of cinnamon on top. Yum!
For another alternative, add some orange zest to the mixture and for garnish. Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber; the blue agave nectar is also low on the glycemic index. The yogurt is no cholesterol, non-fat and gives you that creamy sensation we all crave. Cinnamon not only tastes good, but Dr. Oz says it helps to stabilize sugar levels in the blood! This dish is super heart healthy and yummy!
The other great thing is to remember to enjoy a half a plate of greens with your meal! Try kale! Try a new salad with new greens! There are so many great options! I really love sautéed kale with olive oil and turmeric powder! It's exotic and unusually nutritious! Kale is one of those dark leafy cancer-fighting greens packed with a punch! I just barely wilt it in the skillet (unlike my grandma who boiled it for hours with ham hock.) Just slightly cook it in olive oil and toss in some turmeric powder! Turmeric is great for helping inflammation in the body! The less inflammation, the better your body can burn fat! Plus it just tastes great!
Lastly, eat earlier in the day! Let yourself digest. Go out for a romp outside with your family and dogs. Your body will love you and so will your stomach.
