Oh my god, you think to yourself, as you wipe beads of sweat from your upper lip, Why did they have to have it outside in the middle of July?

Embarrassed that you’re starting to look like you’re at a pool party rather than a formal wedding reception, you head to the bar to grab an ice-cold beer to cool off. Little do you know that depending on how you hold it, that beer can help you appear cool in more ways than one.

Our bodies have 3 vulnerable areas: the neck dimple, the belly button, and what I call the “naughty bits.” When we feel threatened, these are the areas we instinctively protect. Therefore, when we cover them, others perceive us to be uncomfortable and guarded. Unfortunately, we tend to hold our drinks in front of either our neck dimple or our belly button. So that ice-cold beer that was supposed cool you off could actually be making you appear edgy and tense.

A study done by Dr. Glenn Wilson, a consultant psychologist at King’s College in London, analyzed 500 drinkers at bars and how they held their glasses. Dr. Wilson then characterized their personalities based on their body languages, especially in relation to how they held their glasses. The people who used them as barriers and held them in front of their bodies were called the ice-queens. They seemed defensive and distant and that to approach them would be a waste of time. However, those who held their drinks by their shoulders were perceived to be relaxed and at ease. He named these people the fun-lovers because they appeared open and conversational.

So avoid looking like an ice-queen with that ice-cold beer. Instead, communicate your fun and high-spirited side and hold the glass off to the side of your body, keeping your most vulnerable areas uncovered. This communicates a comfortable, confident demeanor – and people will notice how “cool” you really look! For the ladies, put that other hand on your hip, and you gentlemen can put your hand in your pocket with your thumb sticking out; both are dynamite stances that will make you look unstoppable, even in a heat wave.

So remember, next time you’re feeling the heat at a summer get-together, grab a cool drink and hold it off to your side. You’ll look smokin’ hot – but in a good way!
