Bar for the Road?

Steve asked me to recommend a good energy bar that he could keep with him in case he needs some fuel while traveling. Most of the energy bars out there violate the #1 rule for our ultimate nutrition plan, and that’s having any of the following in the first 5 ingredients:

Steve asked me to recommend a good energy bar that he could keep with him in case he needs some fuel while traveling. Most of the energy bars out there violate the #1 rule for our ultimate nutrition plan, and that’s having any of the following in the first 5 ingredients:

  • Saturated fat (animal products, full fat dairy and tropical oils such as coconut, cottonseed, palm and palm kernel oil)
  • Trans fat (anything with hydrogenated oils in it)
  • Simple sugars (enriched grains such as white bread, pasta, rice as well as sugar)
  • Syrups (high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses, cane juice, etc)
  • 100% whole grain as applicable

If you look around though, you’ll find some that actually are better for you than others, but you'll have to be investigative. Watch out for any type of honey, brown rice syrup or cane juice in the first few ingredients and look within the parenthesis. For example, if a product has a "blend" of some sort, look to see what's in it – does it violate the rule?  

If you run out and buy a few for yourself, make sure to still check the label to determine that it does not have the undesirable ingredients above. By the way, fruit is always a great snack option and travels nicely as well. I've given Steve a few of my favorite energy bars – let’s see what he thinks!
