Decoding the Food Label

Steve assured me that his non-dairy creamer was trans fat free but beware consumer – the ingredient label may still have hydrogenated oils in it, aka, trans fat. Trans fat is essentially a poison to us, possibly causing our HDL good cholesterol to go down while our LDL bad cholesterol to go up. The problem is, under the labeling laws, manufacturers may claim their product is “trans fat free” if it has 0.5g of less of trans fat per serving. Even a small amount of trans fat is harmful though so any product with hydrogenated oils in your house should be thrown out. Opt for skim or 1% milk instead. Steve made the change and is healthier today because of it, what about you?
