Let’s face it, as a kid; the best thing about Halloween (after dressing up, of course) is the candy. For one evening a year, children prowl our neighborhoods looking for something sweet to put in their pillow case or plastic pumpkin and we adults gladly oblige. Perhaps in an effort to make our home the coolest house on the block, we get the best candy, the king size bars, the best selection, etc. and we also tend to get the candy a few weeks ahead of Halloween night. Sure we tell ourselves that perhaps the candy will be sold out closer to the date and we could be left with nothing but the truth is, it gives us an excuse to have those evil treats around the house. This year, make a pact to keep not only yourself healthy but also the future of our nation healthy as well. You can do this by offering non-candy options that are still enticing to kids (and I’m not talking about pencils, apples or pennies). Examples include Halloween stickers, trading cards, glow bracelets, spider rings, plastic fangs, super balls or even jump ropes. If you really want to go all out, I’d give out cheap pedometers. These items are popular with kids and will give them something that candy can never provide – the gift of active playing.
