You CAN have a healthier Thanksgiving. Americans gain an average of 1 pound throughout the holidays and although that does not sound like much, we tend not to lose this pound over the years. My goal for Steve this year is to enjoy Thanksgiving without going overboard on fat and calories. After all, it’s about spending time with family and friends, not the food.
Some tips for Steve include:
1. Begin the day with a healthy, balanced breakfast – don’t “save up” for the big meal, you’ll only overeat
2. Revamp the traditional recipes and go for healthier versions. Reduce fat and calories whenever possible – want sour cream for your potatoes? Use fat-free Greek yogurt instead or use 100% whole wheat bread when making stuffing. Simple revisions can make a big difference.
3. Portion control is key – I’ve asked Steve and his whole family to forgo the traditional platter dishes and trade down to a 9-inch plate. They’ll be able to put less on their plate while fooling their brain that they have more.
4. Load up on the dark veggies and reduce the amount of high fat mashed potatoes, stuffing and dark meat turkey
5. Eat until you are content, not until your pants are about to burst! Don’t wear your most comfortable sweat pants to dinner either.
6. After dinner, skip the dessert and go for a walk. Your body will thank you
