Fighting Fat with Ayurveda: Part 2

In the first part of my blog on the topic of “Fighting Fat with Ayurveda” I introduced you to the Ayurvedic topic of “ama” or toxins that accumulate in your body and cause unwanted weight gain. I also explained the important role that digestion plays in fighting fat and gave a recipe for a Detox Tea that helps you to gently remove those toxins. Click here to read the post. Now, I am going to share more fat-fighting secrets from the ancient healing tradition of India, Ayurveda.

Triphala is one of the most popular of all the Ayurvedic herbs. It is used on a regular basis as part of a daily health regimen because of its ability to gently but effectively cleanse and detox the digestive tract and promote the absorption of nutrients. Triphala rejuvenates the entire body and therefore supports longevity and balances all different body types. It helps treat a wide variety of digestive problems, such constipation, hyperacidity, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Triphala is composed of 3 “fruits” that act synergistically together. The 3 fruits are Amalaki, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki. Amalaki works as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that removes excess heat from the body. It also helps to stimulate the production of red blood cells, enhance cellular regeneration, increase lean body mass, strengthen bones, and maintain healthy blood sugar level. Haritaki supports the body’s natural cleansing process by gently removing toxins that accumulate in the colon. It is also considered to increase energy, intelligence, and mental attention.

Bibhitaki is the third ingredient in Triphala. In Sanskrit, Bibhitaki means “one who keep you away from disease.” Bibhitaki is particularly effective in reducing the accumulation of fat and fluids in the body. Each one of these herbal preparations has tremendous value individually. However, when they are combined in the form of Triphala, they work as an even more powerful tool to detoxify and strengthen the body; helping you to achieve your ideal weight.

Triphala comes in 2 main formulations – powder or tablet. There are several organic sources for Triphala on the internet. I recommend using Triphala in the following combination as part of your weight-loss plan.

Each evening take the following mixture at bedtime.

To 1/2 cup of warm water, add the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon of Triphala powder
  • 1 teaspoon unflavored, uncolored psyllium fiber
  • 1 teaspoon ground organic flax seeds
