Breakfast: Is it the Most Important Meal of the Day?

We have all heard our parents and grandparents tell us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do we really know why?  I did some internet research on the subject and found some interesting facts and science behind the theory and would like to share this with all of you. Food is fuel and energy for our bodies and without it we would probably spend the day in a fog, fighting off a headache or with a bad attitude.

Eating breakfast breaks the fast that our bodies are in from the night before. This is especially important for diabetics, like myself, and children.  Eating breakfast increases our metabolic rate (how fast we burn calories). If we skip breakfast, our body doesn’t process our next meal as quickly and tries to hold onto the afternoon meal as long as possible instead of burning it right away. Studies have shown that weight loss can be more difficult and weight gain more prevalent in people who decide not to eat breakfast.

Below are a few reasons why you should not skip breakfast.

  • People who skip breakfast are more likely to eat more food than usual the next time they get a chance to eat.
  • People who skip breakfast tend to snack on high-calorie foods to keep the hunger monster at bay.

Yes, our parents and grandparents were right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Below is a delicious breakfast recipe given to me by a friend that I would like to pass on to all of you.

Oatmeal Friendly Pancake

Makes 1 serving

1 package of instant oatmeal

3 egg whites, beaten
