A lifestyle change requires a commitment to nourish your body with only the healthiest foods available. Making this change means that you are making a concerted effort to control the foods that you put into your body. This lifestyle change also requires a behavioral change, which can be a difficult adjustment. Making these changes with a buddy can help make you feel not so alone in this journey and keep you in check.
What does a buddy really do? A buddy offers emotional support, which is so important when making this change. You can observe your buddy and learn insights into your own behavior toward meals. Buddies help to keep you on track by encouraging you to maintain the lifestyle change that you both are implementing.
Here are some tips to help you and your buddy work towards your diet goals together:
- Keep a food diary. Be sure to write down everything that you eat throughout the day, even if it was a piece of chocolate cake. By glancing at this diary, you will be able to see where you need to focus.
- Keep an emotional diary. Be sure to write down how you feel when you ate something that was very healthy or when you ate something that wasn’t so healthy. You will then find out why you ate that piece of chocolate cake – maybe you were sad, etc. Discuss these feelings with your buddy.
- Compare your diaries with your buddy. By creating these diaries you both can help one another by giving encouragement and also suggestions.
The diaries also keep you accountable. If you slip up, you will have to admit to it. Because you know that you will have to add whatever food you eat to the food diary, you will be aware of each and every food item that you put into your body which will make you will be closely connected with your habits over time.
Remember when you commit to a lifestyle change, you are making a commitment to enhance the health of your body and are paving the way for a more active lifestyle. Go ahead and find that buddy. I have found mine!
