I had to be wise and make good food choices.
I have just returned from being on a mini-vacation. How did I stay on my program? I have to admit I was a little anxious, but not worried.
I know my program like the back of my hand. All I had to do was implement it. When I went out for breakfast, I didn’t even open up the menu, I immediately ordered a bowl of oatmeal and berries or an egg white omelet with veggies. I did not have potatoes or toast; I had tomato and lettuce instead. And of course, I had a cup of decaf coffee with skim milk, not cream.
Lunch was easy. A salad with grilled chicken or salmon. Dressing was olive oil and balsamic vinegar, always on the side.
I always started out my dinner with a cup of soup, then a salad with lots of raw veggies and olive oil or balsamic vinegar dressing. My main course was a grilled piece of chicken or fish and a side order of a veggie.
What do I do for snacks? I packed plastic bags filled with my favorite snack (Cheerio Mix) a great version of granola or trail mix. I pre-packed a week’s worth of this snack before I left for vacation, so that I knew I could just grab one and leave it in my purse if I was planning on being out for the day. This is my favorite snack so I knew I could not live without it.
Vacations are great and you can have lots of fun as long as you plan ahead and have those snacks already packed and ready to go.
My biggest challenge was the dreaded buffet. I always loved buffets. You can choose whatever you want to eat and go back as many times as you want. This is no longer one of my favorite places to eat. There are too many choices, too many temptations, but I did the almost impossible and did go to a buffet but with a plan in place. I knew that I could have soup, so I picked a simple soup without cream, more like a broth soup. I filled up on a large salad with lots of raw veggies and olive oil and balsamic vinegar as my dressing. Now for the entree. I decided on the car ride over to the buffet that I could only pick 1 entree, not a little piece of this or a little taste of that. I chose the grilled salmon and the roasted cauliflower and a small baked potato. I was so full from the soup and large salad, I barely finished my salmon and had no intention of going up for seconds.
Dessert, wow, so many to choose from, which one will I choose? None. There is always fruit on the buffet so I grabbed an apple and went on my merry way. So, yes, you can do a buffet when you are following a diet program. You just need to have a plan and stick to it.
