Yesterday was the last day of school in our town – the games can officially begin! My oldest nephew, David, finished kindergarten! His little life was the catalyst, years ago, that led me to lose all my weight. I love him so much and his Aunt Nancy would do just about anything for him.
Last night, in celebration of his completing his first official school year, my sister planned a "splurge" night! Pizza, cupcakes and a movie! My sister is so thoughtful and ordered a veggie pizza with literally 20 different vegetables on it with no cheese for me! I have to shave off some calories somewhere, right? She had a beautiful garden salad with mixed greens plucked straight from her yard with a healthy, homemade herbal vinaigrette.
The cupcakes, oh, the marvelous, dreaded cupcakes. She splurged by buying cupcakes from our favorite cupcake store. She only bought four to split among nine people. I'm sure she knew if there were any lingering around, a little mouse named Nancy might be tempted to eat the rest!
After our gift opening and game of Simon Says, we splurged on the heavenly cupcakes. I did choose to nibble on a chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake with a cookie nestled on top. I also took a crumb or 2 of chocolate fudge cupcake with cream filling. I took a few bites and knew full well that the next day I would need to take a few extra steps to melt off these decedent treats.
Now, today is officially summer! School is out! My day began by jogging with Benaiah (in the stroller) 2.5 miles to my sisters' house. Upon arrival, I reloaded with some water, only to run around the yard after my 3 nephews and son playing tag. We twirled, jumped, squirt water guns and acted plain silly! Next on the agenda, lunch. Ultimately, we packed up like a roaming caravan and jogged back 2.5 miles to my moms' house where we swam our little hearts out. I'm getting tired just recounting the events of the day!
Now, back to my house – where we rode our bikes in the cul-de-sac, swung on the swing set and then finally made our way inside were we quite literally crashed! Here I am, lying in bed, thinking to myself how I set my intentions to burn off the excess calories I had consumed yesterday. In my effort to get moving, I felt a little like Forrest Gump when he just ran and didn't stop!
If you should have a "splurge" and eat foods that are not normally part of your healthy way of life, set your intentions to walk a little further, maybe even spend a little more time on your garden, take a bike ride, hike a new trail, or just run around a little more with the kiddos.
Sweating is good and it's the time of year to play a little bit!
