I love to eat foods that are in season! I never used to even know what foods were in season at the various times of the year -- and now those are the very things I seek out! A powerhouse superfood is pomegranate and right now they are at their prime. The beautiful ruby-colored fruit is now in season! There are many reasons I love this particular fruit, and the fact that it is rich in antioxidants just pushed it right to the tip-top of my list. It is sweet yet tart, with a flavor that just bursts right in your mouth. Not to mention, digging the delicious seeds out of this 3.5-inch fruit can keep me busy and entertained for over an hour.
Yesterday, as I watched my favorite TV program (The Dr. Oz Show of course) on my DVR after work, I sat on the couch loving every juicy burst of flavor popping from this delicious treat! I so enjoy this season because every year around this time I can look forward to indulging in this healthy beautiful fruit! It amazes me how rich and full of flavor foods are during their bountiful harvest time! Summer brings bushels full of delicious blueberries and red tomatoes warm off the vine while fall yields all sorts of wonderful squashes – the varieties at times seem endless.
I try to focus my meal planning when these foods are at their freshest! Take some time to explore the different foods that come with each new season. During our lives we move through different seasons, and so should our foods. We should adapt and change our palette as life brings different foods to our table. Opening our minds to the richness in life is exciting and rewarding. Go to the grocery store this week with the purpose to buy foods that are at their peak of freshness and enjoy the flavors of the season! Gourds, pumpkins, pomegranates and squash are not just for festive decorating...they are for eating! Enjoy!
