When we watch a person on their weight loss journey, we can only see the physical changes they experience. Full of pride and joy, we watch them overcome obstacles and blast through plateaus. We admire and try to replicate their tenacity and dedication. To those watching, it may appear to be a walk in the park. I will say, it is far from a walk in the park and takes work and dedication each and every day.
What I have come to learn is that the journey to health and wellness is far from easy, and so much more than physical. The decision to lose weight must begin in your heart and mind. You have to know that YOU deserve it. You deserve to enjoy a life without the added health complications that are avoided by a balanced diet and exercise.
Losing weight needs to be a conscious decision that only you can make for yourself. Once the decision is made and your mind is committed, then your body has no choice but to follow. It is when you begin to implement changes in your life and change your lifestyle to a healthier one that you will begin to see physical changes made evident. Your body will begin to transform right in front of you. Each time you take a look in the mirror, you’ll see results. That buttock will be firmer and rounder. Those arms will look more defined, that belly will disappear. Your posture will be more erect. Those shoulders will be pulled back, clearly defined. That chest will be sticking out. Your stance will begin to depict confidence and pride.
While the physical changes you experience will be great, expect to undergo mental changes as well. Along the course of the journey, fears will arise. What will you look like when you reach your goal? Will you be happy with the end result? Will people accept you once you reach your goal? Will people accept the changes you’ve made along the way? Will you change as a person? These fears or concerns certainly can affect your progress. I’ll admit I’ve experienced a few myself.
Along the course of my journey, I’ve had relationships that were tested and failed. I’ve been accused of not being the same Stacy I once was. On the brighter side, I have also met some wonderful people and formed lasting and meaningful bonds. The truth is when you take on a new lifestyle, you will change. Your behaviors and priorities will shift in line with your goals. Over the past year, I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve learned how to push myself to reach goals that are meaningful to me, regardless of how big or small. I’ve discovered my own self worth. I’ve come to love the skin I am in, flawed and all. I am still the same Stacy just thinner, stronger, more driven and even more determined to help others conquer their weight loss battles.
