Take Care of Your Skin
As the largest organ of our body, skin has a big job to do. It is responsible for protecting us from the sun’s UV radiation, from free radical synthesis due to exposure to car exhaust and other air pollutants. It also works to rid our bodies of toxins through oil and sweat excretion. It makes good sense, then, to take very good care of our skin.

Watch what foods you eat. We now consume more chemicals in our food than any other generation because of the increasing habit of eating fast and pre-packaged convenience foods. While this step has made our lives easier, it has not necessarily made our lives better.

Our skin is sum and substance of what we eat and drink, and what we expose it to. Here are a few tips to make 2010 the best year your skin has ever had.

What to Drink and What to Avoid

Obviously, dehydration is a bad condition. Any drink that dehydrates you should be kept to a minimum; this means anything with caffeine or alcohol. Sugar-laden drinks interfere with your hormones, sometimes causing unwanted skin conditions. Sugar-substitutes are chemicals, and while scientists know a lot about them, many naturopaths suggest that you choose natural alternatives like honey or fruit nectar. Water is your best drink.

What to Eat and What to Avoid

Dark chocolate, egg whites and honey are very skin-friendly! Fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables are your skin's very best friends. Eating as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can in as many colors as possible will reward you by making your skin younger-looking, more supple, and will help to bring back a natural glow.

Foods filled with chemicals do more harm than good. Try to eat more naturally, include raw foods (uncooked fruits and vegetables) this year and leave the fast food products alone.

What to Put on Your Skin and What to Avoid

Most bad skin conditions are the result of neglect. Too much sun, wind and water without repair will leave skin rough, dry, dull, red, irritated, and feeling tight. Simply paying attention to what your skin needs will result in a clear improvement.

Not every product works the same way on every person so take advantage of products that will work on your unique skin type, whether it is dry, oily or a combination.  Do your research for the skin management line that will effectively address your skin’s needs. Currently, there is a wide selection of products that will moisturize, contain antioxidants and treat dark spots. When you find one that feels really good, stick with it, and use it as directed.

Some product lines suggest that you use a cleanser, toner, eye cream, daytime face cream, and nighttime face cream among other things. If you find a product that works well with your skin, the companion products will likely work well for you too because they are made from similar base products. If you need eye cream, use it. If you're pretty young, you can get away without it. It’s often best to use what you need, not what the salesperson thinks you need.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

One thing to always use is sunscreen. Many good face creams now have a nice level of sunscreen in them, which works to protect your face even when you're just inside your home and not out in direct sunshine. Anything that you use on a daily basis is going to do more good for you than something that you will resist using. Find skin care products that you like and that do the job you want them to.
