Learning to Enjoy Exercise: Fake it 'Till You Make It

Fact: In order to lose weight you must burn more calories than you consume. If you LOVE food as much as I do, then you must add exercise to your lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off. This may seem like a daunting task if you happen to share the aversion to exercise that I had growing up. But I am living proof that it is possible to change your lifestyle and habits!

If you LOVE food as much as I do, then you must add exercise to your lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off. This may seem like a daunting task if you happen to share the aversion to exercise that I had growing up. But I am living proof that it is possible to change your lifestyle and habits!

Did You Know It Only Takes 21 Days to Form a New Habit? Which means, if you do the same thing every day for 21 days it will become a habit.  And studies show that in a no more than 6 weeks (maybe less) you will begin to feel naturally motivated to exercise regularly. Remember, I grew up hating all physical activity and sweating. But it worked for me! And it can work for you too!


When first starting your weight loss journey, make a point of committing to add exercise to your new healthier lifestyle. Start gradually by setting small goals and keeping promises to yourself.  Begin by simply committing to exercise for 10-30 minutes daily for at least 5-6 times a week over the next 6 weeks.

(After you have formed the habit, you may cut your days back to 4-6 days a week. Four days of exercise is the minimum required for weight loss. Three days minimum for maintenance and 6 days max. with at least 1 day of rest.) 

On the days when you can't imagine exercise of any type, just promise yourself, you will always do it if for at least 10 minutes.  Every little bit counts and it will help you form the habit! Always make the effort!

 

Remember this is coming from a recovering, chronically lazy person. Which means I truly understand how difficult starting a new exercise routine can be and how overwhelming it can feel in the beginning. But trust that it will begin to feel easier, each and every day that you do it. And remember each day you exercise is one step closer to your goal weight and a huge step forward in improving your health.

I now not only exercise regularly, but if I miss a few workouts, I don't feel as good, physically or mentally. Exercise fills my body with endorphins that I can feel immediately after the workout (particularly when I weight train).  Exercise truly lifts my spirits! Which is specifically noticeable when I am feeling a little down in the dumps. When I begin to exercise, around 10 minutes into the process, I start to feel an immediate difference in my energy level, spirit and demeanor. It definitely makes me more prepared to take on the world. And I swear to you, years ago it would have been difficult to find someone who hated physical activity and sweating as much as me!

Start adding exercise to your life today! Remember to remain consistent to begin to form the habit. And I promise that in 6 weeks or less you will begin to feel a natural inclination to exercise. Each day it will begin to feel like less of a chore. And soon you will know the endorphin rush and joy I feel when I have just completed a great workout!

Remember! The more calories you burn, the more you can consume! So, fake it till you make it!
