And the Winner Is…

It was just recently announced that there would be a Chili Cook-Off in my office. I thought to myself, “Chili… interesting.” I’ve made chili before and I’ve even tried the recipe in YOU: On a Diet, which was yummy. But I still wasn’t sold on entering the contest, as chili isn’t my specialty. My dear friend, Donna, who was coordinating this, mentioned the contest to me and somehow persuaded me to enter. In my mind, I was in the contest, but in my heart, I wasn’t entered yet. The day before the contest, I knew that I had to get my chili done, but I still didn’t know what I was going to do, what the ingredients would be, and what time I had to accomplish it.

That day after work I picked up the munchkin and headed to the grocery store. I picked up 2 pounds of ground turkey breast, 2 large cans of tomato sauce and 2 large cans of diced tomatoes. I figured I’d fudge the rest.

At home, I started with the cooked the ground the turkey, added various seasonings and sauce, cooked it up and called it quits. The day of the cook-off, I gave my chili a name and put in the conference room. I walked into that room and there were 10 other entries in all kinds of new-school digital crock pots. It wasn’t a cook-off – it was a chili war!

I plugged in my crock pot and prayed for the best. The tasting started at 11:45 am, and folks walked and sampled the chili, and then talked and ate more. Some pots were emptying fast and others were going gradually. My 6 pounds of chili looked like it wasn’t going anywhere fast and I was committed to not taking it home.

The team cast their votes, and my fate was back in the hands of my dear friend Donna, the “admin extraordinaire” also known as “hustlin.” We waited and waited as she tallied the votes then we waited a bit longer as she prepared the email to notify us of the winner. We waited and waited and then the winner was announced… Toni Winston! I felt like Ms. America! My chili had won and folks wanted to know what I had done! I thought, “Not much!” But, hey, the votes were in and the winner was me.

Some folks had asked if my chili was healthy, and I thought, “What would make chili not healthy?” Then I thought about things like sugar or syrups to sweeten it up. But now that my lifestyle is healthy, I cooked healthy chili and I am the winner of a $100 Visa gift card!

So I’m sure that you are reading wondering what’s in the chili! Enough with all the commentary. You can check out the recipe below!
