Often times I hear folks say the race isn’t given to the swift or to the strong, but to he who endureth until the end. In the mind of many, however, we think, “If I can make it to the end before everyone, I’ve won! If my pace is faster, my stride longer or my distance greatest, I’m sure to be victorious.” What I have learned is that it’s not always about finishing fast, but enduring until the end.
While losing weight, you may wonder; when is the end? Is it when you reach your specified goal? Is it when you feel comfortable in your clothing or in your own skin? For me, I have come to realize that I will not be “finished” until this life as we know it ends. Why do I say that? Well, I’ve made a lifestyle change - so while I may be finishing shedding pounds at some point, I must continue in this race where I am making smart food choices, moving my body and being accountable.
Often times we shed the 10, 20, or 100 pounds that we originally set out to lose, and we get so comfortable that we just slow down or stop - because, hooray, we did it! What happens to you when health is not at the forefront of your mind and you are living life footloose and fancy free? What happens when you give in to those cravings and go back to just a nibble at those family gatherings and celebrations with friends? What happens when you back off those 10,000 steps and settle for just 5,517 steps or 7,812 steps? What happens when you fail to prepare meals, shop smart, cook light?
What happens is exactly what has happened to me; slowly but surely the weight crept back on, 1 ounce at a time. The question then becomes, “How many pounds, inches or dress sizes must you recover in order to decide that it’s time to refocus, reenergize and reengage?”
For me it was 9 pounds. I’m sure you are thinking that 9 pounds isn’t much, but for me it’s a wakeup call. The call for me to realize that I’ve lost my focus. So while I’m not sitting around eating bon bons and sipping martinis, I still lost my place in the race. I crossed the yellow tape after reaching my goal and then went into cruise control. Cruise control for me was not planning, not always reaching 10,000 and engaging in some celebratory nibbles. Well, I wouldn’t even say nibbles, but bites - big bites!
I guess you are wondering what this means to you. This means to keep going, never stop and finish strong. I’ve had my Thanksgiving ham, helped my husband polish off the rest of that banana pudding and now my head is back in the game. The race is on and my commitment to you is to endure until the end - whenever that may be.
This week I have mastered my steps and even picked up kickboxing. Kickboxing has given me the energy and the excitement to re-engage in this journey. I’ve had all the support I needed to be successful and have been instrumental in others being successful, but I still was able to get off my game. I put myself last and put on a few pounds. While I am still below my 2 dress-size goal given to me by Dr. Oz, I know that I lost focus. But I can see clearly now.
Here are a few tips to help you on your journey:
