Anti-Aging Secrets the Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know

How much do you really know about your anti-aging products? Find out the truth behind your favorite beauty treatments. Every year, Americans spend up to $20 billion on products in hopes of reversing the effects of time on their appearance. But before you spend your money on chasing an anti-aging cure, we’ve unveiled four must-read myths about some of the most popular types of beauty products.

Under Eye Circle Erasers

The best tested circle erasers contain caffeine. Dark circles are almost impossible to treat with topical products because they’re often caused by genetics, like thin skin or larger veins in the under-eye area, and allergies. Eye creams with caffeine can temporarily help with under-eye puffiness by reducing water retention to give the area a smoother appearance. They can also help with dark circles as they constrict blood vessels, but they only affect the skin’s top layer. If your dark circles are more than skin deep, they probably won’t disappear all together, but they may fade enough over time.

Anti-Wrinkle Creams

Wrinkle creams can range in price from $8 to $80 – and there are even some that top out at $400. But when tested, the $400 cream was no better than an $8 one. Beyond that, results when using any anti-wrinkle cream leave something to be desired, especially if your wrinkles are deep set. Rather than trying to reverse the effects of time, try preventing wrinkles in the first place. Use sunscreen and drink plenty of water – these are two of the best wrinkle fighters, and they’re not nearly as expensive!

Cleansers

Facial cleansers that contain acid, peptides and vitamins are on your face for too short a time to make much of an impact. Rather than use these, look for moisturizers with similar ingredients so they can be absorbed into the skin instead of washed off. If you still want to use a specialized cleanser, make sure to find the right one for your skin. For instance, if you have dry skin and pick a cleanser with harsh chemicals, like alpha hydrocxy acids, it can irritate your skin further.  Be sure to talk to an expert before choosing a daily cleanser.

Scar Eliminators

It’s nearly impossible to eliminate a scar with a beauty product. Once you have a scar, it’s there for good. When scars form on an injury site, your body responds by inflaming the area and creating a blood clot on the cut. Then your skin starts to make new cells that build up and form a scab, which eventually falls to reveal the scar tissue on the surface of your skin where the injury used to be. The scar will continue to change over months, fading overtime, but it will never quite match your unharmed skin’s natural tone, due to a lack of melanin. Creams can soften the look of scars and reduce their appearance and discoloration, but only plastic surgery can truly tame a really angry scar or stretch mark.
