The brain grows rapidly during the last trimester of pregnancy and first 2 years of life. A primary fat in the nerve cells of fetal and infant brains is DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid. DHA belongs to the family of Omega-3 fatty acids, which must be obtained through diet. After birth, DHA can be provided through breast milk, but levels are contingent upon the mother's diet.
