Being able to see well when it’s both light and dark out is more complicated than you might think. To achieve this minor miracle, your brain is constantly monitoring the amount of light around and changing the iris of your eyes to let more or less light in. The iris (the colored part of your eye) is actually a muscle that expands or contracts to let more or less light in depending on whether it’s a sunny day or a twilight evening. That control helps your ability to see constant so that you can go about your daily life without needing to worry too much about the lighting.
