Weird body quirks strike everyone at random. Luckily, we’ve got fixes for some of the most common ailments.
Body Quirk: Brain Freeze
This excruciating headache strikes when cold hits the roof of your mouth and triggers blood vessels to rapidly constrict and expand. The nerves in your mouth interpret the swelling as pain and send pain messages to the brain.
The Fix: The second you feel a brain freeze coming on, put your tongue to the roof of your mouth. The heat from your tongue will calm the nerves and reduce pain faster.
Body Quirk: Charley Horse
A charley horse is nothing more than a muscle spasm that, while quick and harmless, can still be very painful. Muscle spasms commonly occur when your electrolytes are imbalanced, you’re dehydrated, or that muscle is overworked. For instance, when muscles suddenly contract, your body’s electrolytes can become imbalanced, causing nerves to fire uncontrollably. This is when charley horses happen.
The Fix: A knee-jerk reaction is to massage your leg, which does help with the pain from a charley horse. But, eating potassium-rich foods and replenishing your electrolytes is a good way to prevent an imbalance.
Try this electrolyte elixir for a delicious and natural way to replenish your body’s calcium, sodium and potassium:
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup tomato juice
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tsp lemon juice
Mix all the ingredients together, and enjoy.
Body Quirk: Popping Ears
When your ears pop, it’s your body’s way of preventing a ruptured ear drum when the pressure inside your ear is drastically different from the outside.
The Fix: Hold your nose and close your mouth, and blow gently. As long as you’re careful and gentle, it’s not harmful to your body, and will help regulate the pressure in your ear.
Body Quirk: Eye Twitching
Though a lot of people think that twitching eyes are caused by stress or fatigue, the real hidden cause is dry eyes. When eyes are too dry, you involuntarily start blinking to keep them moisturized. After a while, the blinking triggers your nerves and tricks the brain into making your eyes twitch even more.
The Fix: While twitches eventually go away on their own, to help speed along the process, apply a hot compress on the eye for 30 seconds to suppress the twitch.
