Shopping for healthy food can be a discouraging – and costly – experience, especially if you’re not looking in the right places. But, armed with the right information, you’ll be surprised by how many great deals you can score at your local grocery store. Dr. Oz reveals the five cheapest health foods – all for under $1 per serving.

Adzuki Beans

These beans are full of iron, magnesium, protein and fiber. Providing 17 grams of fiber per cup, adzuki beans are packed with much more fiber than other varieties, like black or pinto. At $2 a can, or 57 cents per serving, they’ll fill you up, give you a boost, and can be a substitute for animal protein in any dish.


Daikon is a large East Asian white radish that looks like a giant white carrot. This cruciferous vegetable offers cancer protection like its relatives: broccoli, cabbage and kale. Daikon is high in vitamin C and folate, and it contains digestive enzymes that help your body break down food more easily. It costs about $1 per pound and you can find it in the produce aisle either whole or pre-grated. 

Black Rice

Just a spoonful of black rice contains the same amount of antioxidants found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar and more vitamin E. Black rice is prepared in the same way as other kinds of rice, but it may take an extra few minutes for all of the water to be absorbed. Black rice costs $4.49 a bag, which breaks down to 49 cents per serving.

Canned Salmon

Canned salmon contains up to four times as many omega-3 fatty acids as chunk light tuna. If you live far away from where salmon is caught, canned salmon may be a better choice than the “fresh” fish delivered to most grocery stores. Dark Meat Chicken

Dark meat chicken contains more zinc, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, vitamins B6 and B12, amino acids, and iron than white meat chicken, making it the more nutrient- and mineral- rich option. To make dark meat chicken even tastier, just marinate it! It costs 2.99 a pound or 75 cents per serving.

The diet included 1.5 ounces of mixed nuts for half the group and pretzels for the others (both "snacks" delivered the same amount of calories).
