DASH is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension; hypertension is another word for high blood pressure, but this diet's focus on healthy foods makes it a great choice for anyone trying to lose weight. As with any diet, water is the best choice of beverage, and you should try to drink as much of it as possible. Caffeine and alcohol are technically permitted while on this diet, but definitely limit your consumption of both in order to see the best results. Similarly, limit your sodium intake to no more than 2,300 mg per day, and you should even try to get that below 1,500 mg if you can. Finally, while the DASH Diet allows up to six servings of lean meat per day, vegetarians can absolutely follow this diet by substituting beans as their source of protein. Nuts vs. Pretzels

UCLA researchers put 95 overweight or obese folks ages 30–68 on a diet that provided 500 calories less than needed to maintain their resting metabolic rate for 12 weeks, then maintenance for another 12. The diet included 1.5 ounces of mixed nuts for half the group and pretzels for the others (both "snacks" delivered the same amount of calories).
