Controversial alternative medicine guru Dr. Joe Mercola returns to reveal his most radical cures yet. He claims he's found all-natural answers to cancer, exhaustion, weight gain and even brain fog. Could your health be changed forever? Dr. Oz puts these theories to the test.

A strong proponent of alternative medicine, supplements and holistic treatments, Dr. Mercola had made a name for himself by defying convention and thinking largely outside the box. He believes that the mainstream medical community is too apt to put patients on prescription drugs, which relieve symptoms but often don’t address the underlying causes of disease. Because of this, he’s made many enemies; on the other hand, he has garnered millions of online followers. Dr. Mercola has expanded his mission from providing provocative information to openly advocating his health-care beliefs.

Dr. Oz does not agree with everything Dr. Mercola’s says, but he does appreciate how Mercola pushes physicians to think differently about medicine.

Here, Dr. Mercola reveals some of his most radical cures yet. Dr. Oz investigates Dr. Mercola’s claims and puts his theories to the test.

Dr. Mercola Says: Cancer Can Be Cured With Eggplant

Dr. Mercola argues that an affordable cream, which uses the eggplant extracts known as BEC and BEC5, appears to cure and eliminate non-melanoma skin cancers in weeks. A mixture of naturally occurring glycoalkaloids found in the plants of the nightshade family, including eggplant, have been shown to be highly effective in treating human skin cancers. The power is in the pigment – its natural chemicals bind to skin cancer cells and is highly toxic to them, yet they cause no harm to healthy cells. One study found that 20 out of 24 skin cancer lesions disappeared after using this eggplant extract cream. There is currently one company that makes this cream – Curaderm; it costs $125.


Dr. Oz’s Bottom Line

Dr. Oz finds this treatment intriguing and believes more research should be done. Skin cancer is the number-one cancer in the United States. Do not self-diagnose and do not skip the doctor. You need to have your doctor diagnose a skin lesion. And remember, this cream appears to be effective only on non-melanoma skin cancers. If you get a lot of non-melanoma skin cancer spots or are worried about surgery and scarring, as your doctor if it makes sense to pursue this alternative treatment.

Dr. Mercola Says: Walking Barefoot Cures Exhaustion and Weight Gain

Dr. Mercola claims that a process called “grounding” or “earthing” can significantly change your health. Grounding or earthing refers to contact with the Earth’s surface electrons by walking barefoot outside or sitting, working or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems, transfering the energy from the ground into the body. Emerging research supports that this may result in reduced pain, better sleep and less inflammation. The logical explanation for the reduction in inflammation is that the Earth’s negatively charged antioxidant electrons enter the body and neutralize positively charged free radicals in the body. To get this benefit, Dr. Mercola recommends grounding or earthing sheets, made with fine thin strands of silver and which connect to an outlet; these cost about $200.

Dr. Oz’s Bottom Line

Before spending money on a device for grounding, try just stepping outside, in your yard. Avoid wood surfaces, as wood insulates you from the earth. See if doing so improves your energy levels.

Dr. Mercola Says: Detoxifying Your Body of Mercury Cures “Brain Fog” and Fatigue

Dr. Mercola states that chronic mercury exposure from occupational and environmental sources, dental fillings and contaminated foods, like certain fish, is a significant public health threat. The nervous system is more sensitive to mercury toxicity than any other organ in the body. Mercury in the central nervous system causes psychological, neurological and immunological problems in humans. Too much exposure to mercury can cause nerve damage, resulting in fatigue and foggy thinking.

Dr. Mercola suggests taking chorella, a freshwater algae, which can be found in supplement form. The chorella binds to toxins and heavy metals and flush them out of your system. He suggests starting with a lose dose, 50mg, once or twice a day. Chorella is not tolerated by some people because of gastrointestinal distress. In this case, chitosan can be used as an alternative. Additionally, while it is not as effective as chorella, eating cilantro, parsley or mint is an all-natural way to detox.


Dr. Oz’s Bottom Line

Limit potential mercury exposure by limiting your fish intake. The recommended allowance of fish per week is 12 ounces, or two fish meals a week. Generally, larger fish that have lived longer accumulate higher levels of mercury; swordfish, shark, king mackerel are ones to avoid. Tuna steaks have more mercury than canned tuna; white albacore tuna has more mercury than light tuna. Tuna consumption should be limited to 6 ounces a week, or one of your 2 fish meals that week.

If you’re worried about exposure from your fillings, ask your dentist if your fillings have mercury. If you’re due for a replacement, see if ceramic fillings will work for you.

Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
