Research out of the University of Illinois at Chicago has shown that fasting is helpful when it comes to both losing weight and lowering blood pressure. While this study specifically looked at weight loss in those who are considered obese on the BMI scale, conclusions can be drawn to show positive effects on weight loss in general.

Participants in the study were not restricted in the amount and type of food they could eat, but they were restricted by time -- they were only allowed to eat between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The research showed that "those who followed the time-restricted eating diet consumed fewer calories, lost weight and had improvements in blood pressure. On average, participants consumed about 350 fewer calories, lost about three percent of their body weight and saw their systolic blood pressure decreased by about seven millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), the standard measure of blood pressure." The research seemed consistent with other studies that have been done to show the benefits of fasting.
