Why did you want to become a doctor?

I find personal fulfillment in helping and doing good for others. In particular, I like curing people of their illnesses whenever possible and helping them achieve a better quality of life. 

What sets you apart from other doctors in your field?

I perform very complex limb sparing (save the limb instead of amputating) surgeries for children and adults afflicted with bone and soft tissue sarcomas as well as other types of musculoskeletal tumors. There are only approximately 150 orthopedic oncologists in the United States. Each operation is unique for each type of patient since each type of tumor may differ in size and location. Each operation is therefore tailored for each patient. In many instances, once the tumor is removed it is similar to rebuilding a bionic man/boy or woman/girl. The sarcoma is removed with the bone and often the adjacent joint and then the limb is reconstructed with special types of metal prosthetic replacements. I am a very compassionate physician and treat patients similar to my family members. I provide them with much kindness and hope especially when afflicted with life-threatening illnesses. 

What are your 5 tips for living longer?

  1. Twice a week I intensely work out the large muscles in my thighs and buttock doing squats, dead lifts, lunges and sprints.
  2. I routinely incorporate kettlebells into my exercise routines.
  3. I do good things for other people, pay it forward and remain positive.
  4. I practice portion control and calorie restriction to 2500 calories per day of well-balanced meals.
  5. I import grapes from Chile and make my own red wine. Then I have a glass per day.

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
