Researchers look at the role of white button mushrooms in glucose production.
Scientists have conducted a new study on mice looking into the prebiotic effects of white button mushrooms. The team monitored how the mushrooms modified the gut microbiota and if glucose regulation improved. Two types of mice were used: one group with regular gut microbiome and one bred to lack a gut microbiome and be entirely germ-free. The study co-author Margherita Cantorna reports, “There were big differences in the kinds of metabolites we found in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in the liver and serum of the animals fed mushrooms that had microbiota compared with the ones that didn’t.” The effect of eating white button mushrooms is believed to trigger a reaction in the gut microbiome that increases certain types of bacteria, which can alter the expression of certain genes that are involved in the production of glucose.
The scientists found that mice experienced a change in their gut microbes due to the production of short-chain fatty acids. The findings suggest that white button mushrooms could be used to manage diabetes because of the role they play in glucose production. Cantorna states, “Managing glucose better has implications for diabetes as well as other metabolic diseases.” The study confirms that there is an important link between what is in one's diet and the bacteria in the gut. The researchers plan to expand the study to mice with obesity and then to human participants in hopes of gaining more understanding of how our daily diets affect metabolic processes. This research may help prevent various health conditions from developing but more time is needed to determine exactly how.
