4 Ways to Keep Skin Healthy During Quarantine, According to a Dermatologist

If you feel like you’ve aged a decade this year, you're not alone. The COVID-19 pandemic has left us all feeling burned out at one point or any other. Stress can mess with everything from your heart to your mental health and even your skin. And being stuck at home without our usual care and beauty routines surely isn’t helping. Fortunately, there are some ways you can alleviate stress and turn back the quarantine aging clock.


To help you look your best, natural hair care expert Curly Nikki and dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman came on The Dr. Oz Show on December 7, 2020, to share their best stress-busting beauty tips. Here are their recommendations.

Mix Some Oils Into Your Routine

Oils are a must for any beauty routine — both in your food and on your skin. “Our bodies aren’t used to spending this much time in the dry heat indoors,” Dr. Dendy says. “We are parched and that is why it seems like we’ve all lost our glow. We have to replenish.”

You should prioritize working oils into your routine twice a day, once in the morning and again at night. In the morning, try adding an oil like flaxseed oil to your morning smoothie, Dr. Dendy says. “Flaxseeds are rich in vitamin E, which is great for both skin and hair health,” she says. “Vitamin E supports the scalp and gives your hair a strong base to grow from by reducing oxidative stress and preserving the protective fatty layer.”

At night, you can use cold-pressed marula oil on your face and chest before bedtime. Marula oil is high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and amino acids, and will leave your skin feeling nourished. You can also use marula oil on your hair to give it some of its sheen back.

If you don’t have marula oil, other oils can help your hair too. Curly Nikki recommends using three to six tablespoons of whatever oil you have (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.), warming it in the microwave for about 10 seconds, and then applying it evenly throughout your hair. You’ll want to test a small amount of oil on your wrist first to make sure it’s not too hot. When applying it to your hair, be sure to also massage it into your scalp. Leave the oil on your hair under a plastic cap for 15 to 30 minutes and then rinse and follow with conditioner.

Try Coconut Milk Face Icing

Yes, we’re talking about icing for your face. This icing is not like the icing you put on a cake, though you technically could eat it. Coconut milk face icing is made using ice cubes made from coconut milk. All you have to do is freeze some coconut milk and then rub those ice cubes on your face. “This works because coconut milk is super hydrating, calming, and soothing,” Dr. Engelman says. “It makes it a solid choice as a cleanser, moisturizer, and treatment for irritated skin.”

Use the ‘She’ Technique

With masks covering the bottom halves of our faces, our eyes are truly the star of the show. To give your eyes a youthful appearance, Dr. Dendy recommends using the “she” technique:

  • Shape: Use brown mascara to fill in your brow. Brown mascara is less harsh against older skin or skin that is pale.
  • Hide: Try salmon-colored concealer to camouflage dark circles.
  • Elongate: Get a pair of magnetic lashes to make your eyes really pop.

So while you may not feel well-rested, these tips will help ensure you at least look like you’re getting your beauty sleep.

Sleep on Satin

Satin pillowcases are a must for your hair and skin. Satin is a weave that comes in different material types like silk and polyester. If you can afford to, try and buy silk satin.

“Satin is a smooth surface with very little friction, which means less tugging on your skin than with a traditional cotton pillowcase,” Curly Nikki says. “This means less wrinkles. They’re also less likely to absorb moisture from your skin, keeping it fresh and dewy.” And, with less friction, you’re less likely to wake up with knots and tangles in your hair.

While these tips can help your skin feel refreshed, know that it’s okay if you’re not feeling put together right now. You’re not letting yourself go, you’re just doing your best to get through a stressful time. When you’re ready to shine, these tips will help you look your brightest.
