Black Hairy Tongue

Despite its unappealing name and appearance, black hairy tongue is a benign condition. Black hairy tongue is the result of bacterial overgrowth that results in elongated papillae with yellow to black discoloration. Poor oral hygiene, recent antibiotic use, or a fungal infection can trigger this condition. People may notice bad breath or a metallic taste. Brushing the tongue with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste 2 to 3 times a day should help this resolve.
