Bonnie's Wake Up Call from Her Old Fat Suit

"Hey there I've been missing you! C'mon, just try me on for a little while. Please?" That's what my fat suit was telling me when I was out in Anaheim last week at The Natural Products Expo West. I was there having fun, seeing all these amazing new products that are being launched. Every booth had delicious and unusual samples. Himalayan honey, unusual savory tofu snacks, hundreds of kinds of granola snacks, and beverages of every kind and claim known to man!

"Hey there I've been missing you! C'mon, just try me on for a little while. Please?" That's what my fat suit was telling me when I was out in Anaheim last week at The Natural Products Expo West. I was there having fun, seeing all these amazing new products that are being launched. Every booth had delicious and unusual samples. Himalayan honey, unusual savory tofu snacks, hundreds of kinds of granola snacks, and beverages of every kind and claim known to man!

But, I got scared! I was out of my routine! I was not focused on my regular life of getting to the gym every day. I took a jump rope with me but never got around to using it, which was odd because I really love jumping rope at the gym. I didn't have my regular meals of salads with fish, or any of my home-cooked meals. And despite the fact that the samples were healthy, they still contained calories that were higher than I normally need. At night, I tried to eat reasonably healthy but it was difficult!


I felt my jeans were tighter! My arms were losing their nice cut and definition! I felt bloated. I noticed my waist wasn't quite as lean. I felt as if my fat suit was calling me saying, "Come on, you can just keep going! I'd love to try you on for size again."

NO, I thought, I don't want that! I did get scared a little. I was conscious of my decisions to just enjoy eating some unusual things that I don't normally eat, and to leave it at that. For 5 days, I went off the grid into the unknown!

When I returned, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I had to return to my pattern of eating and my consistency with the gym. I could not believe that in just 5 days, my body had changed that significantly! My toned muscle wasn't as cut. All that hard work the last 2 years – that's what I kept thinking about. I had gained 6 pounds in 5 days!

But when I returned back home, I put my sneakers on, got my butt to the gym and started right on in on my weight lifting and cardio intervals. Thankfully I am back down to 142 pounds. My muscles are coming back to where they were before I left. They remembered. I remembered that I don't want to wear the fat suit again. I want to embrace the new smaller muscular me and love me this way for a while....this suit fits just great!

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
