Celebrations!

Last week, I celebrated my birthday. I'm 32 now. It's funny how the older I get, the younger I feel! I think I had gotten accustomed to feeling so miserable everyday that I was unable to really enjoy my life. I dreaded my day-to-day tasks as they seemed insurmountable at times when my energy levels were low. My day-to-day activities were enough for my body to handle and life outside of a day’s work seemed nearly impossible.

I live life to the fullest now and soak up every moment and fill it with memories. I am enjoying my time with my very active 1-year-old. He keeps me running around playing hide-and-seek all day and night and I feel like a kid again. It is the small thrills in life that bring me unending joy. Crawling on the floor after my son, throwing him in the air and chasing him around are among my favorite things! Instead of enjoying birthday cake, I enjoyed pureed mangoes and bananas with my son! How things change!

However, this 32nd year of life for me is going to bring a new set of goals! One of these goals is to complete a 10k. With each new year, are there things that you want to set as new goals?  Our bodies are amazing machines that love to perform when given the chance!  I now think of new things that I want to challenge myself to do. Ways in which I push myself out of my box and test the limits. I'm excited with each year that passes now as I gain more knowledge about myself and my body.

Maybe it's not your birthday soon, but with the new year coming and the old year passing, start thinking about how you can get yourself out of your comfort zone and push your limits. Whether it's something small, like walking 30 minutes a day. everyday! :) Maybe even trying something new in your daily routine like yoga or stopping to meditate and be still in your busy schedule. Or consider picking up some free weights and incorporating strength training into your routine. Try something that even the sheer thought of makes you a little uncomfortable. And in trying something new, and mastering it, you’ll have a renewed confidence both physically and mentally!

I can't believe it's already November, but also start brainstorming about the things you'd like to do in the new year that lies ahead.  My 32nd year of life has begun and I've never been more empowered to live then now! My hope is the same for you!

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
