The Colors of Life

When was the last time you looked at a piece of fruit before you put it in your mouth? Or examined the deep hue of a veggie before putting it in your cart at the grocery store? It’s probably been a while. After all, we usually don’t stare at our food before we eat it. Perhaps we should though, because the color of the fruit or vegetable that you’re consuming has a lot to do with its vitamins and nutrients. For example, foods high in potassium tend to be colored orange or red. Foods high in vitamin C are often red, orange or green. The color of these nutritional wonders are provided not by food dye or other artificial additives, but by nature. Often times the deeper the hue of a fruit of vegetable, the better is it for us.That’s because these color-causing components also help fight against certain cancers, protect our brains, and make our skin vibrant and youthful. Eating healthy can be easy and fun if we look at it in the right light. Occupying yourself with the need to get this vitamin or that mineral is not nearly as fun as saying, “Today, I’m going to eat 6 different colors.” How many colors have you had today?
