Eat, Drink and be Merry!

One of the biggest reasons that Dr. Oz’s plan has worked so well for me in losing weight and now maintaining my weight for more than 3 1/2 years is because it’s not a diet – it’s a lifestyle change! The holidays are right around the corner. There will be all kinds of yummy treats to eat and special beverages to drink! Guess what? Eat the treats, drink the drinks and be merry. I sure do! Here’s how you can still lose or maintain your weight during the holiday season:

One of the biggest reasons that Dr. Oz’s plan has worked so well for me in losing weight and now maintaining my weight for more than 3 1/2 years is because it’s not a diet – it’s a lifestyle change! The holidays are right around the corner. There will be all kinds of yummy treats to eat and special beverages to drink! Guess what? Eat the treats, drink the drinks and be merry. I sure do! Here’s how you can still lose or maintain your weight during the holiday season:

  1. Never deprive yourself of anything!
  2. Have that cookie, cake or whatever treat it is you want. But have just 1 cookie or 1 slice of cake. Sometimes even just a bite of what you want will take care of that craving!
  3. Eat that 1 unhealthy meal, just make sure you hop right back on the healthy wagon with that next meal!
  4. Never arrive at a party hungry, have a healthy snack before you leave and drink plenty of water.
  5. For each alcoholic beverage you have, match it with a glass of water. Still keep it to a minimum of 2 drinks!
  6. Twenty minutes before that unhealthy holiday dinner, eat a palm-sized handful of walnuts. It will make you feel fuller, faster.
  7. Remember, it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to give your brain the signal that it’s full, so eat slowly!
  8. Always put your fork down in between bites!
  9. Add 30 minutes to your exercise routine, even if it’s only walking!
  10. Never miss a weight lifting or strength training workout (you should do this 3 times a week,) because 1 pound of muscle at rest per day burns 50 calories and a pound of fat only burns 3!
  11. I always bring a healthy dish or appetizer to any party I’m invited to, this way you do have a healthy option!
  12. After that big holiday dinner, ask if anyone would like to go for a walk with you. Family and friends will be chatting the whole way and it won’t even feel like a workout.
  13. Never skip a meal or a snack just because you know you’ll be eating one unhealthy meal or treat that day, this will only slow down your metabolism!
  14. Finally, put yourself first! I know the holidays can be very busy, but putting yourself first is key to keep you on track! Workout, eat healthy and don’t deprive yourself this holiday season! If I can do it, you sure can too!

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
