Fall is my favorite season. I love the crispness in the air, watching the leaves turn beautiful colors and apples! Yes, apples. It’s apple picking season and my husband and I picked apples at our usual farm. Apples are not just a pretty face, they also have many nutritional benefits.

Fall is my favorite season. I love the crispness in the air, watching the leaves turn beautiful colors and apples! Yes, apples. It’s apple picking season and my husband and I picked apples at our usual farm. Apples are not just a pretty face, they also have many nutritional benefits.  

Here are some interesting nutritional facts:


  • They are a rich source of flavonoids and polyphenols, which are both powerful antioxidants. 
  • Cornell University researchers have found that by eating 1 apple with its skin can give you an antioxidant effect that is equal to taking about 1,500 mg of vitamin C.  
  • Pectin found in apples is an excellent source of fiber and can help lower bad cholesterol.
  • 1 apple is only 60 calories; a major plus!

Besides eating fresh apples, I love to cook and bake with them. Below is my quick and easy recipe for crock pot applesauce.

Crock Pot Applesauce

Ingredients

Makes 8 servings

8 apples, peeled, cored and sliced in chunks

1/2 cup water

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

Directions

Put everything in the crock pot and let it cook for 4-6 hours.
