Fiber: Let's Clean Out Those Pipes!

I work at a salon where women love to chat, and I love to chat. Topics range from Dr. Oz (of course,) to local news, celebrity news, latest beauty trends/tips, etc. I am always talking about weight loss, recipes, exercise, health, and lastly, "fad" weight loss tricks. People have asked me on numerous occasions what I think of colonics. I like how Dr. Oz says that as females, we are “self-cleaning ovens!” I'd like to think of that area as self-cleaning as well... at least it should be.

My diet, prior to becoming educated, rarely ever consisted of any natural fiber. Now, one of the biggest secrets to my success has been consuming fiber like it's going out of style. I am constantly learning about foods I never used to eat, and my mind takes me back to last summer. We were reminiscing about this tale just this week at work. A kind client brought us in a huge basket full of fresh picked plums from her yard. There is nothing more that I loved more than eating the first fruits of the season. I still like to eat... a lot. I ate 1 little plum and sat there until I had consumed 13! I ate 13 plums in 1 sitting!

When I got home, all I can say is that I had a complete colon cleanse, free of charge! I later looked online to see what is in a plum, and came to find out that they are high in fiber. Fiber plays such an important role in weight loss, satiation and health. There are so many benefits to eating fiber. Now, I am not recommending OD-ing on plums. However, if you eat the recommended  daily intake (or more) there will never be a need to have a colonic for weight loss!

Increase your daily fiber by choosing foods that are naturally high in fiber. My top ten favorite foods that contain a lot of fiber are lentils, black beans, kale, artichokes, broccoli, raspberries, pears, oats, and peas.

Q: I end up overeating because it makes me feel better and I never really get full. I'd like to lose weight but this makes it hard. Any suggestions?

A: Being persistently hungry can cause big trouble. So can overeating for comfort/pleasure. These two behaviors, say researchers from Baylor University's Children's Nutrition Research Center, are controlled deep within your brain by serotonin-producing neurons, but operate separately from each other — one in the hypothalamus, the other in the midbrain. They both can, however, end up fueling poor nutritional choices and obesity.

Eating for Hunger

When hunger is your motive for eating, the question is: "Does your body know when you've had enough?" Well, if you are overweight, obese or have diabetes you may develop leptin resistance and your "I am full" hormone, leptin, can't do its job. The hormone's signal to your hypothalamus is dampened, and you keep eating.
