How Water Saved My Life!

I have a water aerobics class available to me at my shore home, and I usually stay at my shore home on the weekends. The class starts at 9am, and after being out late the night before I used to be too tired to get up and take the class. I would say to my husband, "Do you want to take the class?" In response, he would just groan and roll over. That was all that I needed as an excuse not to take the class. I know, how lazy is that?!

Anyway, since I started my journey to wellness in February, I have a lot of energy and I am up at 7am to start my day. I finally decided to just do it! So, I put my bathing suit on and of course my cover up, and went down to class. For me, just putting on a bathing suit was an accomplishment because I am very self-conscious of the way I appear in a bathing suit. 


The instructor welcomed me to class and everyone in class was friendly and made me feel so comfortable that I totally forgot I had my bathing suit on and I was in front of people. Wow, that was a big step for me.

The class was great and after the class everyone went into the hot tub and chatted about how they were going to spend their day. I felt so energized after taking the class and my appetite was decreased for the entire day. I was filled with happy endorphins! I have arthritic knees, so this form of exercise is great for me because there is no stress on my knees. I am now addicted!

Later in the afternoon, I went back down to the pool and just walked around the pool for about 20 minutes. It felt great and my body loved it. The class is an hour long and I was doing exercises I thought I could never do. We even used weights at 1 point in the class. It not only lifted my spirits, but also made me feel good about myself. I am no longer ashamed of myself in a bathing suit. I am becoming more and more comfortable with my body shape just the way it is right now - and that was so hard for me to accept. I very rarely looked in a mirror, but now I find myself checking out my outfit and caring about how I look. 

I have been overweight for a good part of my life, but I put on 100 pounds when I became unemployed. It was devastating to me in so many ways, so I turned to food. It will be a year since I became unemployed in June, but what a difference. I have managed to turn my life around and care about myself. I no longer turn to food to comfort me, but have become more social and enjoy eating healthy foods. 

You're probably thinking, how did water save your life? Water has saved my life because a water aerobics class is a form of exercise that my body can handle, and when you combine eating healthy foods and exercise your result will be weight loss and your body will love you for it. For anyone out there who is struggling to lose weight, my advice to you is to take an exercise class or just go for a walk everyday and make healthy food choices. Don't do what I did and find excuses not to exercise or to eat healthy. I spent too many years watching people enjoy life, now I am enjoying life and being a participant - so just do it! Monday: turkey dogs with sauerkraut on whole grain buns (Memorial Day treat)

Tuesday and Thursday: brown rice spinach pasta with veggies

Friday: grilled tilapia on a whole grain bun

Saturday: whole wheat pizza topped with veggies

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
