It’s All About Portions

Terri’s View: You always hear about the latest and greatest diet that enabled celebrities to lose 20 pounds. They’re always the kind of diets where if you match your blood type, eat no carbs, or eat at certain times of the day, you will lose weight. There may be some pros of certain diets, and you may lose weight for a short time. But, is it really changing the way you eat and look at food?

Terri’s View: You always hear about the latest and greatest diet that enabled celebrities to lose 20 pounds. They’re always the kind of diets where if you match your blood type, eat no carbs, or eat at certain times of the day, you will lose weight. There may be some pros of certain diets, and you may lose weight for a short time. But, is it really changing the way you eat and look at food?

Everyone has been on a “diet.” But what you really need is a lifestyle change. Not eating any sugar is not real life. Not eating any carbs is not real life. In a nutshell, it’s all about portions and real food – good, healthy foods just in moderation. Don’t go back for the second helping. Park your car further from the mall. Drink water instead of soda.

Lifestyle changes are the only way you will keep weight off for life. You won’t see changes from a fad diet; but you will from changing those unhealthy habits to healthy ones, by watching portions and making better choices. On paper it sounds so simple, I know. But just take a day, then a week, then a month. Your body will change and you will start feeling better. Things will snowball and you will want to stick to those changes. Small changes become big ones and small weight loss will become big weight loss. It just takes a day to start. Why not make it today?

Ed’s View: What’s this week’s diet? So you’re flipping through a magazine or on the internet, and you see so many diets that you can’t decide what will work. If you Google “diets,” you’ll see about 95 million suggestions come up. If you look through all of them, this may be a way to lose weight.

From my own experience, I tried the liquid diet and lost 50 pounds. I’ve tried the low-carb diet and also lost 50 pounds. I tried to eat just salads and lost weight as well, but one thing these diets had in common was that I gained all the weight back.

I did these types of diets because they were easy. I could drink a shake, eat a steak, or have a bowl of salad; but the one thing that I needed to learn was how to eat properly and exercise portion control.

Food is the fuel for the machine; while this is true, eating is also a powerful emotional release. I think has Terri said it before; we eat out of anger, when we are happy and even when we are anxious. But we need to eat, and yes, it’s an education process. I needed to learn that eating 1 meal a day was bad, and learning this took some time.

What’s great about the way I eat now is that there are different types of foods that I can eat that taste great. I am also about to take in a different variety of foods. Some of the things I have stopped trying to eat are ketchup and mayo, soda (even diet.) I enjoy a Boca burger instead of a regular burger (Yes, Richie, I will admit I like them now!) I also enjoy chicken, fish and fresh veggies.

Here’s the bottom line – you really don’t need to Google “diet.” It is as easy as staying away from fried foods, fatty foods, sweets and adding in fresh veggies, foods high in protein, whole grains, vitamins, (a multivitamin, vitamin B, vitamin D, fish oil and calcium with magnesium) portion control, eating a good breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and dessert. Last but not least, make sure you read the labels; low-fat may not mean low-calories!
