Joy in the Journey

I should have named my son Benaiah a different name -- banana. He was born a long 22 inches and his weight dropped to an alarming 6 pounds. I dare say that his physique resembled a banana! My milk supply was less than adequate and being a first time mom, my son looked perfect through my dreamy eyes of love. However, in retrospect, he looked like he had been stranded on a desert island with no food or water for weeks!

My milk supply was less than adequate and being a first time mom, my son looked perfect through my dreamy eyes of love. However, in retrospect, he looked like he had been stranded on a desert island with no food or water for weeks!


On the flipside, our latest addition to the family, my daughter Abigail, is shorter and plumper. Her appetite seems to be naturally more voracious, whereas Benaiah ate lethargically. Benaiah currently remains slightly picky, but he is holding a healthy weight and is neither slim nor heavy. He eats when he's hungry and loves fruit most of all.



I must confess, I sit and worry about my little girl in a way that I didn't fret with my son. Will she have an eating disorder? The fear of her overeating or under eating looms in my mind. I pray she will grow to have a healthy and balanced relationship with food and love the healthy, living foods that are available to us. I am also aware that my sweet daughter will learn by example, which sets the standard even higher for me. I want to instill in my children so many attributes: a love for God, family and community, and hearts that seek out others' needs before their own. I hope they are passionate about their gifts and talents, hard-working, fun-loving, kind and a little silly!

 
I never worried about Benaiah and his relationship with food. But, I know that my continued journey of health will shape and pave my children's future road. If I can pass on to Abigail a confidence and healthy view towards food and her body, I will feel that the crazy cycle is finally broken and defeated. The society we live in will make my job even more difficult, but I am confident I can be an agent of change. That is the reason I look at my sagging skin (from my 220 pound weight loss) and smile. It's not about how my body looks or the number on the scale. I live and eat to be healthy. I hope to raise my precious son and daughter to focus on health and join me in this amazing journey.

Such lifestyle interventions also help reduce the risks for diabetes, dementia and some cancers and strengthen the immune system.
