My “MOP” System for Special Events

With the holiday upon, us I felt a need to re-post my “MOP” system! How does a food addict go out to a special event and stay on program? That is easy if you use my system called MOP. Let's face it, we all go out for dinner and at this time of year we will be attending holiday parties and at these type of gatherings we need to be prepared, and this is a good time to implement my MOP system:

With the holiday upon, us I felt a need to re-post my “MOP” system! How does a food addict go out to a special event and stay on program? That is easy if you use my system called MOP. Let's face it, we all go out for dinner and at this time of year we will be attending holiday parties and at these type of gatherings we need to be prepared, and this is a good time to implement my MOP system:

Make good food choices

Organize

Plan ahead

I already attended my first holiday party and this is how I handled it. I ate a protein-filled snack (1/12 cup cheerios, 1/4 cup almonds and raisins) before I left so I wasn’t hungry when I arrived at the party. The party was serving cocktails at 5PM and dinner at 6PM.

During cocktail hour I chose a club soda with a splash of cranberry juice. This is a safe choice and you can also add a splash of orange juice if you prefer instead of cranberry juice. H’orderves were a bit of a challenge. I stayed away from fried choices and had a few grilled shrimp and filled up on the fresh veggies and salsa… So far it was so good.

The first course was a cream soup, so I skipped it. The second course was a salad with raw veggies so I ate the salad and asked for oil and vinegar dressing on the side. The entree choices were: chicken, salmon and prime rib. I chose the broiled salmon and ask for the sauce on the side. It was served with broccoli which was steamed, perfect choice. Next came dessert. The desserts were served buffet-style. There was an array of homemade cookies, pies, cakes and a fresh fruit salad. So, what did I do?  Did I eat dessert or did I select the fresh fruit salad? I will let you guess what I choice I made. What I will tell you is that I did stay on program and implemented my MOP System. I made good food choices, organized my food menu before I left for the party and planned ahead.

You can enjoy the holiday parties during this joyous season and be successful if you implement my MOP System.

4 Steps to Shedding Your Pandemic Pounds

Forgive yourself, and start walking toward a healthier you.

For those of you who have put on the Pandemic Pounds or added several new COVID Curves, you are not alone. Alarmingly, the American Psychological Association has recently published that almost half of all adults in their survey now have a larger physique. In fact, 42% of people reported gaining roughly 15 pounds (the average published was surprisingly 29 pounds but that included outliers) over the past year. Interestingly, 20% of adults in this survey lost about 12 pounds (I am surely not in this group). Clearly, there is a relationship between stress and weight change. In addition, one in four adults disclosed an increase in alcohol consumption, and 67% of participants distressingly revealed that they have new sleeping patterns.

This past year has brought about what has been called the 'new normal.' Social isolation and inactivity due to quarantining and remote working have sadly contributed to the decline in many people's mental and physical health, as demonstrated by the widespread changes in people's weight, alcohol consumption, and sleeping patterns. Gym closures, frequent ordering of unhealthy takeout, and increased time at home cooking and devouring comfort foods have had a perceptible impact. In addition, many people have delayed routine medical care and screening tests over fear of contracting Covid-19 during these visits. Unfortunately, the 'new normal' has now placed too many people at risk for serious health consequences, including heart attacks and strokes.
