The Road Trip to Wellness

So far I have lost 40 pounds, and I am still working towards my wellness and fitness goals. I’m feeling great, working out hard and trying new recipes and exercises. My trainer has even turned up the heat on me. Each week I weigh in and report my progress to the “Enforcer.”

This week’s weigh-in was not what I expected, by any means. I woke up and walked over to the scale as I usually do every Friday morning. I felt proud that I was about to see the fruits of my labor. When that scale showed an increase, I almost passed out! “WHAT!” I thought. This has to be wrong. I stepped off and back on repeatedly. The scale kept showing me that nasty number - I had gained three pounds!



My initial reaction was hurt, defeat, frustration, and anger. Instantly I went from being happy-go-lucky to being in a funk. I had worked so hard all week; I sweated more than ever and pushed myself more than usual. I ate all the right things. I did all the right things! I mean, I know this like the back of my hand by now.


Before heading out to meet my trainer this morning, a past conversation with a friend regarding weight loss popped into my head. Here is what I told her:


Weight loss is like a long road trip – on a map you see the final destination and you also see all the mileage in-between you and that final stop. It can seem daunting, even overwhelming, and may tempt you to find a flight just to get there quicker. However, instead of taking the fast route, take time to enjoy the long ride. There will be beautiful scenery, breath-taking views, perhaps traffic stops, and certainly twists and turns. Nonetheless, all these factors create the essence of the memorable trip. Instead of pushing the pedal-to-the-metal take your time and do the speed limit. Enjoy the trip. Anticipate delays so that when they do happen, you are not easily frustrated by them.

Then it occurred to me –  I did not do anything wrong and there was no reason for me to be upset. I simply had approached a traffic stop along my journey. My trainer he told me that with all the working out I am doing and how committed I’ve been to my food plan (no cheats), this is simply water weight, and this too shall pass. My plan of action is to cut back on the salt and increase my water consumption. The car is in drive and I am back to enjoying this road trip and anticipating any other traffic stops or delays that might be ahead. This is one milestone among many more to come I’m sure.


If you are able to relate this panic, don’t worry yourself. YOU will get past this. You may have to adjust a few things here and there, and you may have to up your workouts but know that you will move on. Enjoy the ride because when it comes to weight loss – Slow and steady always wins the race!

Have you ever gotten to the last little bit of a vegetable or fruit and thought they only thing left to do was toss it? Or maybe you didn't get to one before it looked like it should be thrown out? Well there's no need to create more food waste! Here are two foods you can regrow right at home instead of throwing out.

Leftover Ginger

  1. Fill a bowl or cup with water and place your bit of ginger root inside.
  2. After a few weeks, watch for little sprouts to form.
  3. At this point, transfer the ginger to some potted soil. Give it plenty of space and moisture.
  4. After a few weeks, harvest your new ginger root!

Sprouted Potato

  1. Note where the sprouts (or eyes) are on the potato. Cut it in half so there are sprouts on both halves.
  2. Let the halves dry out overnight on a paper towel.
  3. Plant the dried potato halves in soil, cut side down.
  4. Small potatoes will be ready to harvest in about 10 weeks, while larger potatoes will be ready in about three to four months.
