Should Food Entertain Me?

A consumer group has just called for the banning of color dyes in children’s foods based on evidence that many dyes can have adverse health effects on kids. I actually can’t remember the last time I had a food with dye in it, but as I perused the grocery store aisles last night, I realized that dyes are in more foods than we think - and it’s not just in the usual culprits like candy, sugary cereals, red velvet cupcakes, or green ketchup. Just a little bit of research led me to find that dyes can also be in farmed salmon, some varieties of oranges, processed meats and even dog food. I can tell you for sure that when my dog Sea Bass sees his bowl full of food, he could care less what color is it. Sea Bass does not need to be entertained, so why do we? For this week’s nutrition challenge, check your pantry, fridge and pet food for food dyes and if you see them in your food, best to chuck it. Remember that naturally occurring colors found in fruits and vegetables can still be fun for kids and GREAT for them (and us). Stop using food to thrill you. Instead, use foods to fill you and always get bang for your nutritional buck!
