Take Care of the Caretaker

As a wife, mother, sister, daughter, administrative assistant and Wellness Warrior, I often offer myself up as a caretaker. I oversee the lives and well-being of many. I try to make sure everyone’s I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed and sometimes I forget that I have to care for myself.

As a wife, mother, sister, daughter, administrative assistant and Wellness Warrior, I often offer myself up as a caretaker. I oversee the lives and well-being of many. I try to make sure everyone’s I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed and sometimes I forget that I have to care for myself.

What brought me to that realization was that I missed the mark on my 10,000 steps for several days, yet during that time I was applauding others for reaching their daily requirement of 10,000 steps. I knew that I needed to do better because each night as I went to bed, I decided not to notify Dr. Roizen, “The Enforcer,” that I had missed the mark.


Each day on facebook, all of our YOU Gal friends were posting numbers and celebrating successes, and I was cheering them on. I was offering advice and coaching, but I still was missing the mark.

My “aha moment” came when I was watching the “Oz 100” show, and fitness guru Richard Simmons said, “How could I not care for me and tell folk how to take care for themselves?” I thought, that is so me!  How can I help folks if I’m not helping myself?

I have dropped 40 pounds, but I still have a little way to go. My next goal is toning. I want buns of steel! Well, not quite steel, but I want minimize my gluteus maximus in an effort to become swimsuit ready.

After hearing Richard Simmons, I decided to take care of the caretaker by first confessing my 4 day shortfall so that I could get my team in my corner. Often times, folks believe that no news is good news, but in this case it wasn’t. 

I confessed to Dr. Roizen, and he responded, “Whoa, YOUgal. Well, that was your break. Break’s over!!! You’re GREAT!” That made me feel better about my small mishaps. I realized that although I’d fallen short, I could still dust myself off and press start.

It’s a great thing to be able to care of others. It’s great to be revered and to be in demand, but if you can’t take care of you, there will be no you to take care of others. Remember to set a goal and reach for the stars because YOU are worth it.
