While On Vacation, Don’t Take a Break From Your Health!

Last week I took a much needed vacation and like most vacations, my normal daily routine was altered. I fly fished, hiked every morning, did yoga daily, drove through the mountains and ate foods I probably should not have. While flying home, I pondered why I had taken a vacation from healthy eating as well. I hear it from my clients all the time, “I went on a cruise but only gained 5 pounds!” or “I’m dieting now so I can really live it up when I go on vacation next week.”

While flying home, I pondered why I had taken a vacation from healthy eating as well. For me personally, I was healthy most of the time but consumed too much white flour, cheese and sugar. Worst of all, I violated my own rule on a number of occasions in that I ate beyond fullness many days. Why?  I think most of us think that as long as we can still fit into our jeans once we get home, we’ll be fine. Well, I still fit into my blue jeans but I definitely did some altering of my genes in the process. It can be hard when we’re on vacation to stick with healthy guidelines but doing so will mean less inflammation, lower cholesterol and higher intake of important essential vitamins and minerals. Next time you take the time to plan vacation, focus on healthy eating as well. Do some research on healthier restaurants in the area; find out where the nearest grocery store or farmers market is located.  If you’re not traveling internationally, bring a few apples or some healthy energy bars to hold you until you can find healthy food.  


Taking vacation is a great way to re-charge your batteries from all the craziness that life sometimes throws our way but remember, your physical health is just as important as your mental health so hike, walk, run, bike etc but stick to the basics when it comes to healthy foods and portions and if you do fall off the wagon on vacation, remember to climb right back on when you get back home!

For those of you who love murder mysteries, there just may be a silent killer wreaking havoc inside of you. Untreated hypertension, or high blood pressure, can go undetected for a long period of time, mainly because most people with elevated blood pressure do not experience any symptoms. In fact, about one in five people with high blood pressure are walking around unaware that they even have high blood pressure. Left untreated, hypertension can place you at a significantly increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms tearing open, heart failure, kidney failure, blockages in your legs, dementia, vision problems including blindness, and sexual dysfunction (I bet that last one got some of your attention).

How to Read Your Blood Pressure Numbers

Your blood pressure is made up of two numbers. The top number, called the systolic blood pressure, is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart contracts. The bottom number, the diastolic blood pressure, is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart relaxes. Both numbers are important and should be monitored. As people age, both numbers tend to increase, mainly due to increased stiffness in large vessels. Frighteningly, many studies have demonstrated that just a 20 mm Hg (units used for blood pressure) increase in the systolic number, or a 10 mm Hg increase in the diastolic number, doubles one's risk of death from heart disease or stroke.
