When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.


The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.

Instant Oatmeal

This heart-healthy breakfast choice is loaded with whole grains and fiber, but as Swanson reminds us, not all oatmeal is created equal. Some instant flavored oatmeal brands can pack 22 grams of added sugar (along with dried sweetened fruit). Pair your sugary oats with a typical breakfast beverage option like a flavored latte, some tea with honey, a glass of orange juice, or a fruit smoothie — and you might be hitting the recommended daily amount of added sugar even before leaving the house.
